Here’s what I believe had happened. The previous provider — the one who had kept the lawn in good shape for the years visible in her photos — had been aerating the property as part of their service, possibly without making it explicit to her that this was happening. It’s not unusual for a long-term service relationship with a diligent operator to include annual aeration as a default practice that never gets discussed specifically because the homeowner never asks and the operator just does it. When the provider retired and the new company took over, aeration stopped — because it wasn’t in the scope of what she’d contracted for with the new company, and because she didn’t know to ask for it since she didn’t know it had been happening.

The honest timeline I gave her: the lawn would look meaningfully better by the end of year one — the dethatching, aeration, and overseeding combination would produce visible improvement in density and colour within six to eight weeks of the spring treatment. But she should not expect the three-years-ago photos to be replicated by October of year one.
