I get asked this question more than you’d think — usually by homeowners who’ve dealt with enough unreliable lawn companies that they want to know who they’re actually hiring before they hand over their property.
I think that’s a completely reasonable thing to want to know. So I’m going to answer it properly.
My name is Ryan Lingenfelter. I own and operate Cutting Edge Lawn & Landscaping out of Garson, Ontario. We’ve been serving Greater Sudbury since May 2020 — Garson, Val Caron, Hanmer, Lively, Chelmsford, Azilda, Capreol, and everywhere in between.
Here’s the real story of why I started this business, what I was trying to build, and what’s genuinely different about the way we work.
Why I Started It — The Honest Version
The lawn care market in Sudbury in 2020 had a problem. Not a shortage of companies — there were plenty of people offering lawn services. The problem was reliability.

Homeowners I talked to kept describing the same experience: they’d hire someone, things would go fine for a few weeks, and then the calls would start getting missed. Appointments would get pushed. Work would get done halfway. And when something went wrong — damaged property, a job not done properly — getting a straight answer was next to impossible because the person they hired wasn’t the person who showed up.
That’s the reality of a lot of larger lawn companies. They take on more work than they can handle, they send out crews where the homeowner has never met anyone on the team, and accountability gets very thin very fast.
I’d grown up in this area. I knew Sudbury. I knew what the properties here actually needed — the clay soil, the short growing season, the specific challenges that come with our winters. And I knew I could do this differently if I was willing to stay small enough to do it right.
So I started Cutting Edge in May 2020 with a simple premise: an owner-operated business where the person you call is the person responsible for the work. No layers. No excuses. Just someone who shows up, does the job properly, and stands behind it.
That’s still exactly what we are today.
What “Owner-Operated” Actually Means Day to Day
I want to be specific about this because “locally owned and operated” is something a lot of companies say without it meaning much in practice.

Here’s what it means at Cutting Edge:
When you call the number on this website, you’re talking to me. Not a receptionist, not a call centre, not someone reading from a script. Me. Ryan. The person who will either be doing your job personally or directly overseeing it.
When you get a quote, I come out to your property. I walk it. I look at your soil, your grade, your drainage, the condition of your existing grass. I give you an honest assessment based on what I actually see — not a number pulled from a price sheet over the phone.
When the work gets done, I’m involved. On larger jobs I’m there personally. On recurring maintenance jobs, I know your property. I know what it looked like when we started, I know what was done last time, and I know what it needs going forward.
And when something isn’t right — which happens in any business, no matter how careful you are — you call me. I come back. We fix it. That’s it.
This isn’t a remarkable way to run a business, honestly. It’s just the basic standard that I think every homeowner deserves and that too many lawn companies in this area have stopped delivering.
Why Garson — And Why That Matters for Your Property
I’m based in Garson because that’s where I’m from. I live here. My family is here. I’m not a company from somewhere else that decided to expand into the Sudbury market.
And that matters more than it sounds like it does when it comes to lawn care, specifically in this region.
Greater Sudbury has a climate and soil profile that is genuinely different from most of Ontario. Our winters are hard and long. Our freeze-thaw cycles are aggressive. A significant portion of residential properties in this area sit on clay-heavy soil that drains poorly and compacts easily. Our growing season is compressed — you have a shorter window in spring and fall to do the work that actually improves a lawn’s long-term health.
A company that learned their trade in Southern Ontario or that operates primarily somewhere else is going to approach a Sudbury lawn the same way they’d approach any lawn. That’s not always right. The timing is different. The soil treatment is different. What works in Mississauga in April doesn’t necessarily work in Garson in May.
I’ve been working specifically on Sudbury properties since 2020. I know what these lawns actually need. That’s not something you can get from a manual — it comes from doing the work here, in this climate, on these properties, year after year.
What We Do and Where We Work

Cutting Edge handles both residential and commercial properties across Greater Sudbury. Our core services are:
- Grass cutting — weekly and bi-weekly residential and commercial maintenance starting at $39
- Sod installation — full lawn replacement and targeted sod work on damaged areas
- Core aeration — spring and fall aeration to address compaction and improve soil health
- Property cleanup — spring and fall cleanups, debris removal, yard restoration
- Hedge trimming — residential hedge and shrub maintenance
- Mulch and decorative stone — garden bed top-dressing and landscaping material installation
We work across the Greater Sudbury area — Garson, Val Caron, Hanmer, Lively, Chelmsford, Azilda, Capreol, and the city proper. If you’re not sure whether we cover your area, just call or text and I’ll tell you straight.
We use commercial-grade equipment throughout. Not because it sounds impressive, but because the right equipment actually matters for the quality of the result — cleaner cuts, more consistent aeration depth, better outcomes. It’s one of the things that separates professional work from a guy with a push mower.
What Our Clients Actually Say
I’m not going to put a wall of five-star reviews here — you can find those on Google and the BBB if you want to read them. But I do want to share what I hear most often, because I think it reflects what we’re actually trying to do.

The thing clients tell me most frequently isn’t about the quality of the cut or how green the lawn looks, though those things come up. What I hear most often is some version of: “You actually showed up when you said you would.”
That sounds like a low bar. And honestly, it should be. But in an industry where reliability has become genuinely rare, just doing what you said you’d do — showing up on time, doing the work properly, being reachable when someone has a question — stands out more than it should.
We’re BBB listed with an A+ rating. That matters to me not because I care about plaques, but because it reflects a track record of resolving issues professionally and standing behind our work. In four years of operating in Greater Sudbury, we’ve built a client base that refers us to their neighbours. That’s the metric that actually tells you how a business is doing.
What I’m Not Going to Promise You
I want to be straight with you about something, because I think it’s more useful than a typical “we’re the best” pitch.
We’re not the cheapest option in Sudbury. We’re not trying to be. If you’re looking for the lowest possible price and quality of work doesn’t matter much to you, there are other companies that will underbid us and you should probably hire them.
We’re also not the biggest company in the area. We don’t have a fleet of trucks and a hundred employees. We’re deliberately sized to do the work properly — which means we’re selective about how much we take on and we don’t overbook ourselves the way larger operations sometimes do.
What I will promise you is this: when you hire Cutting Edge, you’re hiring me. I’m accountable for every job we take on. If something isn’t right, you tell me and I make it right. That’s not a policy or a guarantee from a customer service department — it’s a personal commitment from the person who built this business and whose name is on it.
That’s why I started this company. And it’s still exactly how we operate five years later.
