Landscaping Services in Sudbury Ontario — What’s Included and What to Expect

One of the most common things I hear on first calls is some version of: “I’m not even sure what I need — I just know my yard is a mess and I want it sorted out.”

That’s completely fair. “Landscaping” is one of those words that means different things depending on who you ask. Some people use it to mean full-scale garden design and hardscaping. Some people use it to mean basic lawn maintenance. Some people use it to mean everything that happens outside their house that they don’t want to deal with themselves.

I’m Ryan Lingenfelter, owner of Cutting Edge Lawn & Landscaping in Garson, Ontario. We’ve been working on residential and commercial properties across Greater Sudbury since 2020. In this article I want to break down exactly what landscaping services in Sudbury actually include, what’s realistic to expect, and how to figure out what your property actually needs before you call anyone.

What “Landscaping” Actually Means in Sudbury

When most Sudbury homeowners call me about landscaping, what they’re actually describing falls into a few specific categories. Understanding which one applies to your situation saves a lot of time on both ends.

Lawn Care and Maintenance

This is the most common need. Regular grass cutting, core aeration, overseeding, fertilizing, edging. The ongoing work that keeps a lawn looking maintained through the season. Most homeowners in Greater Sudbury who call about “landscaping” are actually looking for this — a reliable company that will keep their lawn looking good from May through October without them having to think about it.

Lawn Restoration and Sod Work

This is for properties where the lawn has deteriorated to the point where maintenance alone won’t fix it. Bare patches, compacted soil, drainage problems, sod that’s died off. The work here involves diagnosing why the lawn is failing, addressing the root cause — whether that’s soil compaction, drainage issues, or thatch buildup — and then restoring the lawn with fresh sod or a targeted overseeding program.

Property Cleanup

Spring and fall cleanups. Removing the debris that accumulated over winter, clearing dead plant material, hauling away what needs to go. A lot of homeowners want a one-time cleanup to get the property to a baseline they can maintain — or to hand over to a maintenance company in good condition.

Landscape Detailing

Garden bed maintenance, mulch installation, decorative stone work, hedge and shrub trimming. The finishing work that makes a property look intentional and well-kept rather than just mowed.

At Cutting Edge, we handle all of these. What we don’t do is large-scale hardscaping — interlocking stone driveways, retaining walls, that kind of structural construction work. If that’s what you’re looking for, I’ll tell you straight on the first call and point you toward someone who does that work properly.

Sod Installation and Lawn Restoration in Sudbury

This is probably the most involved work we do and the one with the most variables, so I want to spend some time on it.

Sudbury properties have specific challenges that affect lawn restoration work significantly. The clay-heavy soil that’s common across Greater Sudbury — Val Caron, Hanmer, Chelmsford, most of the residential areas — compacts easily and drains poorly. A lawn that keeps failing despite seed and fertilizer is usually a soil problem, not a seed problem. You can throw the best grass seed in the world on compacted clay and it’s not going to establish properly.

When I come out to quote a lawn restoration job, here’s what I’m actually looking at:

  • Soil condition. I do a screwdriver test in several spots across the lawn. How easily it pushes in tells me a lot about compaction level. I also look at drainage — where water sits after rain, which areas stay wet longest.
  • Thatch depth. A thin thatch layer is normal. When it gets thick it blocks water and seed from reaching the soil. That has to be addressed before any restoration work will stick.
  • Coverage assessment. What percentage of the lawn is salvageable versus needs replacement? This determines whether we’re overseeding, doing targeted sod sections, or doing a full replacement.
  • Grade and drainage issues. If there are low spots that pool water, or areas where grade is directing runoff onto the lawn from neighbouring properties, those need to be corrected first. Laying sod on top of a drainage problem just delays the same failure.

Once I know what I’m dealing with, the restoration sequence typically goes: aeration first to break up compaction, dethatching if needed, grade corrections where necessary, topdressing with quality topsoil, then sod on the worst sections and overseeding on areas with existing grass coverage that’s worth keeping.

The whole process on a typical residential backyard usually takes one to two days depending on the scope. The lawn looks dramatically different immediately — and with proper watering in the first two to three weeks, it establishes well before the summer heat arrives.

Property Cleanup and Seasonal Work

Sudbury winters are hard on properties. By the time the snow melts in April or May, most yards have accumulated a season’s worth of debris — dead leaves that didn’t get cleared in fall, branches that came down, thatch that built up under the snow, general mess that needs to go before the property can be properly maintained.

Spring property cleanup Sudbury Ontario yard debris removal

A spring cleanup typically includes:

  • Clearing winter debris — leaves, branches, dead plant material
  • Dethatching the lawn if the thatch layer has built up significantly
  • Cleaning out garden beds and removing dead annuals from the previous season
  • First edging of the season along driveways, walkways, and bed edges
  • Hauling everything away — we don’t leave the debris on site

Fall cleanup is similar but focused on preparing the property for winter rather than opening it up for the season. Getting the leaves off the lawn before they mat down and suffocate the grass. Cutting back perennials. Final edging. Making sure the property goes into winter in the best condition possible so the spring work is easier.

A lot of homeowners book cleanup as a one-time job and then take over maintenance themselves. Others use it as the transition point into an ongoing maintenance contract. Either works — there’s no pressure to book more than you actually need.

Hedge Trimming, Mulch, and Garden Bed Work

These are the finishing details that separate a property that looks maintained from one that looks genuinely well-kept.

Hedge trimming in Sudbury has a specific timing consideration. Most ornamental hedges and shrubs do best when trimmed after the new growth of spring has hardened off — typically late June into July in our climate. Trimming too early can stress the plant right when it’s pushing new growth. I’ll tell you the right timing for your specific hedges when I see them.

For mulch and decorative stone, we install both. Quality mulch in garden beds retains moisture, moderates soil temperature, and makes beds look clean and finished. Decorative stone is lower maintenance long-term but doesn’t provide the same soil benefits. I can walk you through the tradeoffs for your specific beds when we talk.

Garden bed edging — clean, defined edges between lawn and beds — is one of those things that makes an immediate visual difference. It’s not complicated work but it matters a lot to the overall appearance of a property.

What a Landscaping Quote Looks Like With Us

I want to walk you through what actually happens when you reach out to us, because I think it helps to know what to expect before you make the call.

First, you call or text me at 705-507-6787, or fill out the quote form on the website. I get back to everyone same day.

For any job beyond a simple recurring grass cut, I come out to the property. I don’t quote landscaping work over the phone — I’ve seen too many jobs where the phone description and the actual situation were completely different, and giving a number without seeing the property doesn’t serve either of us.

When I come out, I walk the whole property with you if you’re available. I show you what I’m looking at, I explain what I think needs to happen and why, and I give you an honest assessment of what’s worth doing versus what would be a waste of money for your situation.

Then I put together a quote with a clear breakdown of what’s included. No vague line items. No surprises when the invoice comes. If the scope changes during the job — which sometimes happens when we get into soil work and find something unexpected — I tell you before we proceed, not after.

Payment is due on completion. We don’t ask for large deposits upfront. I think that’s a reasonable way to operate — you pay for the work after you’ve seen it done properly.

What Landscaping Work Costs in Sudbury

I’ll give you honest ranges because I think vague answers are unhelpful when you’re trying to plan a project.

Ryan Lingenfelter quoting residential landscaping job Sudbury Ontario

Grass cutting starts at $39 per cut for a standard residential property. Larger properties and commercial work are quoted individually.

Core aeration on a typical residential lawn runs in the range of a few hundred dollars depending on the size of the property. It’s one of the highest-value things you can do for a Sudbury lawn relative to cost.

Sod installation varies significantly based on the area being done, the soil prep required, and whether drainage corrections are needed. A targeted sod section on a problem area is very different from a full backyard replacement. The only honest answer here is that I need to see the property — but I can tell you the full breakdown is on our sod installation page.

Property cleanups depend on the size of the property and how much has accumulated. Spring cleanups on a standard residential lot typically run a few hundred dollars. I’ll give you an exact number when I see it.

What I won’t do is give you a lowball number to get the job and then add things on later. The number I quote is the number you pay unless the scope genuinely changes and we’ve talked about it first.

Ready to Talk About Your Property?

If your yard needs work and you want a straight conversation about what that work actually involves and what it would cost — reach out. I’ll come out, walk your property, and give you an honest assessment.

No pressure. If what you need is outside what we do, I’ll tell you that and point you in the right direction. If it’s work we can handle, I’ll give you a clear quote and we’ll go from there.
