I Turned Down a $6,000 Landscaping Job in Sudbury Last Month — Here’s Exactly Why

By Ryan Lingenfelter · Cutting Edge Lawn & Landscaping, Garson, Ontario · May 2026

Last month I got a call from a homeowner in Sudbury. Nice guy. Big property. He wanted a full backyard transformation — new sod, retaining wall, interlock pathway, the works. He’d already gotten two other quotes. When he told me the scope, I knew right away we were looking at a $6,000 job, maybe more.

I went out to the property, walked the yard, listened to everything he wanted. And then I told him I couldn’t take it.

He was surprised. Honestly, I don’t blame him. Most contractors would have taken that job without blinking. So let me explain exactly what happened — and why I think it matters if you’re hiring anyone for lawn or landscaping work in Greater Sudbury.

Here’s what the customer actually wanted

The homeowner wanted a complete backyard overhaul. He had a rough slope at the back of the property, a muddy patch that never drained properly, and an open area where he wanted interlock laid for a patio. On top of that, he wanted the whole yard sodded once everything else was done.

In total: a retaining wall to manage the slope, drainage work under the muddy section, an interlock patio roughly 400 square feet, and about 3,000 square feet of new sod. All of it done together, start to finish.

It’s a real job. A meaningful job. The kind of project that genuinely improves how a family uses their outdoor space. I get why he wanted it done.

The real reason I said no

Here’s the honest answer: my schedule didn’t have the right window for it.

That retaining wall and the drainage work underneath it — those are not things you rush. If the wall isn’t built properly, it shifts. If the drainage isn’t graded correctly, the water problem comes back within a season. And the interlock on top of that has to be done after the base is fully settled and compacted, not before.

When I looked at my calendar, I didn’t have a continuous block of time available to do that job the right way. I had gaps — a few days here, a few days there. And doing a job like that in pieces, with breaks in between, is how you end up with problems six months later.

I could have taken the money. I could have squeezed it in and hoped for the best. But that’s not how I want to run this business, and it’s not what that homeowner deserved.

So I told him the truth. I said I wasn’t the right fit for this job right now — not because of his project, but because of my timeline. And I told him what to look for when he talked to other contractors.

What I told him instead

I gave him a straight list of things to ask any contractor before signing anything for a job like this:

  • Will your crew be on site continuously until the job is done, or will there be gaps? Gaps on a retaining wall and drainage project are a red flag.
  • Who is doing the interlock work specifically? Laying interlock looks simple. Done wrong, it heaves and shifts within two winters. Ask whether the person doing it has done it before, and ask to see photos.
  • What’s your warranty on the wall and drainage? Any contractor confident in their work will stand behind it. Vague answers here mean vague accountability later.
  • Are you pulling any permits? Depending on wall height and drainage impact, permits may be required in Greater Sudbury. A contractor who skips that step is cutting corners somewhere.
  • What happens if we get heavy rain mid-project? A good contractor has a plan. An unprepared one doesn’t think that far ahead.

He thanked me for that. I think it caught him off guard — he wasn’t expecting the contractor he called to coach him on how to hire someone else. But that’s how I’d want to be treated if I were the homeowner.

What this means for you if you’re getting quotes in Sudbury

The landscaping and lawn care industry has a reputation problem. There are people who take deposits and disappear. There are people who say yes to every job regardless of whether they can actually deliver. There are people who cut corners on drainage and grading because the homeowner won’t see the problem until next spring — by which point they’re long gone.

I’m not saying that to throw anyone under the bus. I’m saying it because it’s the reality of what I’ve heard from customers who came to me after a bad experience.

When I take a job, I want to be able to stand behind it. If I sod your lawn, I want it to take. If I build a retaining wall, I want it to still look right in five years. That means I only take work I can do properly — which sometimes means saying no.

It also means that when I do say yes, you can trust that I’ve thought it through. I’m not taking your job to fill a gap in my schedule. I’m taking it because I have the time, the crew, and the plan to do it right.

What I can actually help you with this season

If you’ve got a lawn or landscaping project in Greater Sudbury — Garson, Val Caron, Hanmer, Lively, Chelmsford, Azilda, Capreol — here’s what I’m currently booking:

  • Grass cutting and lawn maintenance
  • Core aeration and overseeding
  • Sod installation (residential and smaller commercial)
  • Spring and fall property cleanup
  • Hedge trimming and shrub maintenance
