How Much Does a Spring Yard Cleanup Cost in Sudbury?

This is one of the most common questions I get in April and early May — and it’s also one of the hardest to answer with a single number, because the honest answer depends on what your property actually looks like.

That said, I know vague answers are frustrating. “It depends” is not useful when you’re trying to figure out whether to budget $200 or $800 for spring cleanup. So let me give you the real picture — what the work actually involves, what drives the cost up or down, and the price ranges I typically quote for properties across Greater Sudbury.

What a Spring Yard Cleanup Actually Includes

Before talking numbers, it helps to be clear about what’s actually involved — because “spring cleanup” means different things to different people, and quotes vary a lot depending on what scope is included.

A standard spring property cleanup on a typical Sudbury residential property covers:

  • Leaf and debris removal. Clearing dead leaves, sticks, and organic debris that accumulated over fall and winter. This includes the obvious stuff on the lawn surface and the material that’s packed into garden beds, along fence lines, and under shrubs.
  • Thatch raking. A light rake to lift the matted, dead grass layer that builds up over winter. This isn’t aggressive dethatching — it’s enough to open the lawn surface up and let air and light reach the soil. Important for preventing snow mould from causing ongoing damage.
  • Edge cleanup. Clearing the edges along driveways, walkways, and garden beds that get overgrown with dead material over winter.
  • Debris hauling. Everything that gets raked and cleared needs to go somewhere. Bagging and hauling debris off the property is part of the job — not something that gets left in a pile for you to deal with.
  • General tidy. Anything that’s been brought out by snowmelt — gravel that migrated from the driveway onto the lawn, garbage that blew in over winter, branches that came down.

What’s typically not included in a standard cleanup quote: pruning shrubs or trees, dethatching with a power rake, garden bed planting, or anything that goes beyond clearing and tidying. Those are separate scopes and get priced separately if needed.

Real Price Ranges for Sudbury Properties

Here’s what I actually quote for spring cleanups across different property sizes in Greater Sudbury. These are real numbers based on what the work takes, not padded estimates.

Small city lot — $150 to $280. A compact urban lot in Sudbury proper, New Sudbury, or similar — single car driveway, front and back yard, no major tree coverage or complex garden beds. If the property was reasonably maintained last fall and the debris load is normal, this is usually a two to three hour job for one person.

Medium residential property — $280 to $500. A typical suburban property in Garson, Val Caron, Hanmer, or similar — larger lot, more lawn area, possibly some mature trees that drop significant debris. This is the most common range for Greater Sudbury residential properties. Figure three to five hours depending on the condition it’s in.

Larger property — $500 to $900+. Bigger lots in Chelmsford, Capreol, or rural areas of Greater Sudbury — significant lawn area, mature tree canopy, multiple garden beds, or properties that haven’t had a thorough cleanup in more than one season. These jobs take real time and sometimes a second crew member.

Neglected properties — quoted individually. If a property hasn’t had a proper cleanup in two or three years, the debris load is in a different category. I always quote these in person rather than over the phone because the scope can vary dramatically. I’ve done cleanup jobs on neglected properties that took a full day and a half-load of debris hauling — that’s not a $200 job.

One thing I always include in my quotes that some companies don’t: debris hauling. A cleanup that leaves bags of debris at the curb or a pile in the backyard for you to deal with isn’t really a complete cleanup. When I give a price, hauling is in it.

What Makes the Price Go Up

When I quote higher than someone expected, it’s almost always because of one of these things. None of them are hidden charges — they’re just factors that add real time to the job.

Mature trees. A property with three or four large maples or oaks drops a completely different volume of leaf debris than one without significant tree cover. Leaves compact under snow and can take real time to fully clear, especially from garden beds and lawn edges where they pack in tightly.

Multiple garden beds. Clearing debris out of planting beds with established perennials, shrubs, or ground cover takes more care and more time than raking an open lawn. The more garden beds, the more time.

Property condition. A lawn that had a proper cleanup last fall is a fundamentally different job from one that didn’t. If the fall debris is still there under the winter accumulation, you’re doing two seasons of cleanup at once. I’ll flag this when I assess the property so there are no surprises on the quote.

Access and layout. Properties with gated backyard access, steep grades, or sections that can’t be reached with a wheelbarrow or equipment take longer. Not a big factor on most properties, but worth mentioning.

Add-on services. If you want core aeration done at the same time as the cleanup — which I’d recommend on most Sudbury properties — that gets added to the total. Doing both on the same visit saves a separate mobilization and is often more cost-effective than booking them separately.

Is It Worth Paying for a Professional Cleanup?

I’m obviously not a neutral party on this question, so I’ll try to give you the honest version.

If you have a small property, you’re reasonably fit, and you genuinely enjoy the spring yard work — do it yourself. A few hours on a Saturday with a rake and some bags, and you’re done. Save the money.

If your property is larger, you have a lot of tree debris, you’ve got a busy spring schedule, or you’ve let things go for more than one season — the time and effort starts to justify the cost of having someone come in and do it properly. A cleanup that takes a professional crew three hours might take you a full weekend, and the result is usually better because we have the right tools and we’re not fatigued by hour four.

The other thing worth considering: a proper spring cleanup sets the lawn up for the whole season. Dead thatch removed, debris cleared, soil visible and able to breathe — that’s the right starting point for everything else you’re going to do in spring, whether that’s overseeding, fertilizing, or just getting the mowing season started on the right foot. Skipping it or doing it poorly means you’re behind from week one.
