I’ve been working on properties across Greater Sudbury since 2020. In that time I’ve maintained lawns next to gravel driveways and lawns next to interlock driveways, I’ve watched both types go through six Sudbury winters, and I’ve had a lot of conversations with homeowners on both sides of the decision — some who made the choice years ago and are happy with it, some who made it and aren’t, and some who are trying to make it now and want a straight answer.
The straight answer is that it depends on your property, your budget, and what you actually value — which is not a useful answer on its own, so let me tell you what six years of seeing both types up close in this specific environment has actually taught me. Not what the sales sheet for either option says. What I’ve seen happen to both on Sudbury properties through our winters, our freeze-thaw cycles, and the specific terrain challenges that Canadian Shield geography creates.
What Six Years of Working Around Both Actually Shows You

The reason my perspective on this is different from what you’ll get from a contractor who installs one or the other is that I work around driveways rather than installing them. I’m on these properties every two to three weeks through the season, year after year, and I see how both types age — not just how they look the day they go in or the first summer after, but three, four, five years in, after multiple Sudbury winters have had their way with them.
What I notice most consistently is that the gap between a well-installed version of either option and a poorly-installed version of either option is enormous — bigger than the gap between the two options themselves. A well-installed gravel driveway on a properly prepared base in Sudbury holds up better than a poorly-installed interlock driveway, and vice versa. The material choice matters less than the preparation underneath, and in Sudbury specifically, the preparation underneath matters more than it does anywhere else in Ontario because of what our winters do to anything sitting on top of the ground.
This is the same principle that applies to every surface-level decision on a Sudbury property. What’s underneath determines how well anything on top performs. The variation from one side of a property to the other that I described in the Sudbury lawns next door piece applies just as much to what’s under a driveway as to what’s under a lawn.
What Sudbury’s Winters Do to Interlock That Nobody Warns You About

Interlock driveways look excellent when they’re new. The precision of the pattern, the clean edges, the range of colour and style options available — it’s a genuinely attractive product and on the right property with the right installation it holds up well for many years. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.
What I am going to tell you is what happens to interlock on Sudbury properties that weren’t installed with a base deep enough to handle our freeze-thaw cycle, because I’ve watched it happen on multiple properties over six years and the timeline is predictable.
Sudbury’s freeze-thaw cycle is more extreme than most of Ontario’s. We get hard freezes earlier, we hold them longer, and the shoulder seasons — particularly spring — run through repeated overnight freezing and daytime thawing over a period of weeks. Ground that freezes and thaws repeatedly expands and contracts, and anything sitting on top of it moves with those expansions and contractions. In southern Ontario, where winters are milder and freeze-thaw cycles less severe, interlock installed on a standard base handles this reasonably well. In Sudbury, the same installation gets worked harder every winter.
The result, on properties where the base wasn’t deep enough or the preparation wasn’t done correctly for our specific conditions, is frost heave — sections of the interlock that have shifted, risen, or tilted relative to the surrounding pieces. It starts subtle, usually visible as a slight unevenness in year two or three. By year four or five on a poorly-prepared installation, the unevenness is a tripping hazard and water is pooling in the low spots created by the settling. Resetting interlock that has heaved is not a simple job, and depending on how widespread the movement is, it can cost a significant fraction of the original installation.
The prevention is base depth — more compacted gravel base underneath the interlock than the southern Ontario standard calls for, specifically to account for Sudbury’s more aggressive frost penetration. A contractor who’s been installing interlock in Sudbury for years knows this and builds it in. A contractor using a generic Ontario specification might not. Asking specifically about base depth and how it’s been adjusted for Sudbury conditions before signing any interlock quote is the most important question you can ask.
The edge restraint problem at the lawn line
There’s a second interlock problem I see specifically where the driveway meets the lawn, and it matters to me as much professionally as the frost heave issue does. Interlock driveways require edge restraints along the perimeter to keep the stones from migrating outward over time. Those edge restraints, when they’re installed flush with or slightly above the soil level at the lawn edge, create a compaction zone in the adjacent lawn that shows up as a persistently thin or bare strip running along the driveway edge.
It’s the same compaction dynamic that snow plowing creates on properties with gravel driveways, but with an additional physical constraint — the edge restraint acts as a barrier that changes how the soil immediately adjacent to the driveway drains and how much air reaches the roots in that strip. On a Sudbury property with already thin soil and limited root depth, that strip becomes one of the hardest sections of any lawn to maintain. I see it as one of the three things I check first when I walk a property for the first time — I described that assessment process in the 300 Sudbury quotes piece. The driveway edge strip is almost always the most compacted and most maintenance-intensive section of any lawn, and on interlock properties the edge restraint adds to that challenge rather than reducing it.
What Gravel Gets Right in Sudbury — and Where It Falls Short

Gravel driveways handle Sudbury’s winters better than interlock in one specific and significant way: they’re flexible. Water moves through them, frost works through them, and the ground underneath shifts without the surface cracking or heaving in a way that requires professional repair. A gravel driveway that settles over a Sudbury winter gets regraded in spring. An interlock driveway that heaves over a Sudbury winter gets reset by a contractor at a cost that depends on how bad the movement was.
The maintenance model for gravel is more frequent but lower cost per event. You’ll add gravel every few years as it compacts and disperses. You’ll regrade it after significant winters. The edges need attention where gravel migrates into the lawn, which creates its own lawn maintenance challenge — loose gravel at the driveway edge ends up in the grass, dulls mower blades, and creates an irregular edge that’s harder to maintain cleanly than a solid edge. That’s a real ongoing cost that doesn’t show up in the initial gravel quote but adds up over years of property maintenance.
The bigger limitation of gravel in Sudbury is drainage management. On a flat lot, a well-maintained gravel driveway drains reasonably well. On the sloped, varied terrain that Canadian Shield properties often present — and Sudbury has a lot of them — gravel driveways can channel water in directions that create problems for the adjacent lawn or for the foundation. Getting the drainage right on a gravel driveway installation on a Shield property with terrain variation is not a simple job, and a poorly-graded gravel driveway that directs runoff toward the foundation or into low areas of the lawn can create problems that are more expensive to fix than the driveway itself cost to install.
The drainage consequences on the adjacent lawn are exactly the kind of thing I find when I’m assessing a property for the first time. A persistently wet section next to the driveway, or a bare strip where water channels across the lawn edge, almost always traces back to a drainage decision made when the driveway was installed. The snow clearing difference that matters more than most people factor in
One practical difference between gravel and interlock that homeowners sometimes underestimate going into the decision is snow clearing. A gravel driveway surface is uneven and irregular — snow blowers and plows need to be set higher to avoid throwing gravel, and hand shoveling is rougher on the surface than on a smooth interlock or asphalt surface. Interlock, when it’s in good condition, clears more cleanly. But interlock that has heaved even slightly becomes a snow clearing problem because the uneven surface catches plow blades and shovels in ways that can damage both the equipment and the stones. A gravel driveway that’s rough is expected. An interlock driveway that’s rough is a symptom of a problem that needs fixing.
The Decision Framework I’d Use If It Were My Own Driveway

After six years of watching both options age on Sudbury properties, here’s how I’d actually think through this decision if it were my own property.
Choose interlock if
Your property is relatively flat with good drainage — the frost heave risk and the drainage complexity are both lower on a flat, well-draining lot than on a sloped or poorly-draining one. You’re committed to vetting the contractor specifically on their Sudbury installation experience and base depth specification — not just their general interlock portfolio, but their specific approach to base preparation for our climate. You want a finished appearance that holds its look for many years and you’re willing to invest in the installation quality that makes that possible in this environment. And you’re prepared for the higher upfront cost with the expectation that properly installed interlock should not require significant intervention for ten or more years.
Choose gravel if
Your property has terrain variation, slope, or drainage complexity that makes a rigid surface more vulnerable to frost heave and more complicated to drain correctly. Your budget for the installation is limited and you’d rather have money available for ongoing maintenance than spend it all upfront. You’re comfortable with a maintenance model that involves periodic regrading and occasional gravel top-ups. And you don’t want to think about what’s happening to a significant investment every time a hard Sudbury winter goes through its full freeze-thaw cycle.
The question that matters most before either decision
Whatever you choose, the most important question to ask any contractor quoting either option is what they’re doing with the base preparation specifically for Sudbury conditions. A contractor who gives you a generic answer or quotes a base depth that’s standard for southern Ontario without adjusting for our frost penetration depth is not the right contractor for this job regardless of how good their finished work looks. The finished surface is what you see. The base is what determines whether what you see in year one looks the same in year five.
The same principle applies to every aspect of property maintenance in Sudbury — what’s underneath determines what happens on top, and the decisions made at the base level compound over years in ways that surface-level interventions can’t fully correct.
